BRIEF HISTORY OF HEPSS

THE EARLY BEGINNINGS

“God moves in a mysterious way. His wonders to perform…” This he has done through the establishment of a great institution: Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Secondary School, abbreviated as HEPSS.
The inception of Evangelical Presbyterian Secondary School, Hohoe, “HEPSS” was characterized by toil and sweat, success and failure, hope and despair on the part of all stakeholders namely, the E. P Church, (Gh), the Government, teachers, students and indeed the entire people of the Gbi Traditional Area.

THE ROLE OF THE CHURCH
The need to establish a secondary school in the Gbi Traditional Area was felt as far back as January, 1949. To give concrete expression to this desire, Mr. Francis K. Morny founded the erstwhile WENIGA COLLEGE. Unfortunately, the college could not survive its teething problems. Subsequent attempts at setting up a secondary school in the area were made. Like its predecessor, the TOGO ACADEMY and the GBI STATE SECONDARY SCHOOL, HOHOE all landed on rocks.
All hope of bringing secondary education to Hohoe was however not lost. Fortunately, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, (Gh), also had the desire of establishing its own school. The decision to establish the school had the approval of the Synod Committee and the General Synod of the Church. Thus on Thursday, September 28, 1961, the Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Secondary School “HEPSS” was opened as a private institution during the reign of the late RT. Rev. Eugen Kodzo Galevo, as the then Moderator of the E.P Church, Ghana (1957-1968).
The late Mr. C.K. Amu, a Presbyter at the Hohoe congregation, who was then a Synod
Committee Member, assured the church authorities that the congregation at Hohoe, would give the new infant school free accommodation and full support.
The School was started in a two-storey building of Mr. John Mensah. Furniture was provided by E. P Church, Hohoe congregation to enable the School take off.
